NORFOLK, Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — Sophomore Jarrod West sank a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to give Marshall its first win of 2019 and its first win in Conference USA play.
In a game back-and-forth affair, Marshall (8-6, 1-0) defeated Old Dominion (10-4, 0-1) 70-67 in the conference opener for both teams.
The Herd and Monarchs were tied at 67 when West received a pass from senior Jon Elmore and sank a 3-pointer from the corner with just 1.9 seconds remaining. West score 12 points for the Herd and was 4 of 5 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Elmore scored 20 points on 9 of 21 shooting and also dished out 10 assists, including the game winner, to record his first double-double of the season.
In his first-career start, freshman Taevion Kinsey scored 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds.
Sophomore Jannson Williams added 10 points for the Herd.
As a team, Marshall shot 53 percent (29 of 55) from the field and 36 percent (9 of 25) from 3-point range.
Old Dominion senior B.J. Stith led all scorers with 27 points.
Marshall's five-game road trip will continue Saturday when the Herd takes on Charlotte (3-8) at 4 p.m.
