Mountian East Conference: Fairmont off to NCAA D-II title game

Fairmont State will play for a national championship in NCAA Division II on Saturday by winning over Bellarmine, 79-68, Thursday evening in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The Fairmont State Fighting Falcons have fought their way into the NCAA Division II national championship game.

The Falcons of former Bob Huggins assistant Jarod Calhoun knocked off Bellarmine of Louisville, Kentucky, 79-68, in the semifinals Thursday evening in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

D'Ondre Stockman led Fairmont in scoring with 23, one of four players in double figures.

Fairmont, the No. 1 seed in the Elite Eight, moved to 35-2 with the victory.

The Falcon program becomes the second Mountain East Conference since 2014 to play for a national title. West Liberty lost in the 2014 championship game.

This will be the second time Fairmont has played for a national championship.

In 1968, Joe Retton's Falcons fell in Kansas City for the NAIA national crown.

The national championship game is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
