Marshall Basketball: Southern falls to MU; D'Antoni gets 50th

HUNTINGTON (WCHS-TV/WVAH-TV) - In Marshall's season opener with the University of Tennessee-Martin on Friday Night, Dan D'Antoni's Thundering Herd captured a thrilling overtime win against the Skyhawks. The Herd finished with 102 points.

Meanwhile, Southern University lost its opener to the Fighting Illini of Illinois, allowing 102 points.

Monday night the Marshall and Southern squared off for the first time-ever and the Herd didn't hit the century mark, but did come away with an 83-74 victory.

The win was the 50th for Herd head coach Dan D'Antoni in the early stages of season number four at his alma mater.

Junior Jon Elmore got 20 to lead the way.

C. J. Burks finished with 19. Ajdin Penava had 14.

At 2-0, Marshall plays at Morehead State on Thursday night.
