Former Marshall University running back Devon Johnson has died, according to the university.

Johnson, 25, of Richlands, Va. was a member of the Marshall football program from 2012 to 2015. Prior to his time in Huntington he attended Richlands High School and played football for the Blue Tornadoes.

Marshall head football coach Doc Holliday released the following statement Tuesday night:

“I am shocked and saddened at the news of Devon Johnson’s passing. Devon was a force in our program, both literally and figuratively. Whether on the field or off, his impact was immeasurable and he will be missed by so many at Marshall. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.”

Johnson set multiple records while at Marshall and was a member of the 2014 Conference USA Championship team. In 2014 he was a Doak Walker Award semifinalist and selected to the First-Team All-Conference USA Team.

He holds a school record averaging 7.8 yards per carry and set a school record for rushing yards in a game when he rushed for 272 yards against Florida Atlantic in 2014.

In 2014, Johnson rushed 1,767 yards, which is second all-time in the Marshall record book, despite missing most of three games. He rushed for 19 touchdowns in 2014 which is seventh all-time at Marshall.

Following his collegiate career, Johnson signed with the Carolina Panthers.
