CHARLESTON, WV (WCHS/WVAH) —
One student from Capital and South Charleston high schools will be recognized for their excellence in athletics and in the classroom during halftime of our Wendy's Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week presented by the Marshall Sports Medicine Institute.
Isaac Abdalla was named the St. Mary’s Medical Center Scholar Athlete of the Week for the Capital Cougars.
Abdalla is a senior kicker for the Cougars' football team and won a state championship during his freshman season.
He currently has a cumulative 4.6 grade point average and is taking all honors, dual credit and AP classes.
Abdalla said his favorite subject is math and he homes to go into engineering. He has not picked a school yet, but has narrowed his choices to a few schools, but his decision could depend on his SAT and ACT test scores and if he gets an offer to kick in college.
Sofia Nunez was named the St. Mary’s Medical Center Scholar Athlete of the Week for the South Charleston Black Eagles.
Nunez is a senior at South Charleston and runs track and cross country.
She is taking mostly honors and college level classes in an effort to get a head start on college.
Nunez has not decided on a school, but said she would like to go to West Virginia University and major in biochemistry.
In addition to running track and cross country and carrying a heavy academic load, Nunez also has a job.
Abdall and Nunez will now be finalists to win the St. Mary's Medical Center Scholar Athlete of the Year. At the end of the football season one of our St. Mary's Medical Center Scholar Athletes of the Week will be selected as the St. Mary's Medical Center Scholar Athlete of the Year and will be awarded with a $5,000 scholarship to a school of their choice.
