Point Pleasant holds off Pikeville in first meeting between the schools

Point Pleasant held off Pikeville to notch a thrilling win in our Wendy’s Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Led by quarterback Cason Payne, Point Pleasant (5-0) scored a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter to defeat Pikeville (3-2) Friday night in Mason County.

Point Pleasant got on the board first midway through the first quarter when Payne scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Big Blacks up 7-0.

The Big Blacks would double their lead as the first quarter came to an end when Brady Adkins took an inside handoff from Payne and scored from 11 yards out.

After Point Pleasant dominated the first quarter, Pikeville would rally in the second.

The Panthers got their first score of the game early in the second frame when Zack Roberts took a handoff, lowered his head and scored to cut Point Pleasant’s lead to 14-7.

Just four minutes later, the Panthers would draw even with Point Pleasant when quarterback Conner Roberts connected with Kyle Watkins for a 9-yard touchdown pass.

With just over two minutes remaining in the first half, Conner Roberts connected with Jackson Hensley in the back of the end zone to give the Panther’s their first lead of the game at 21-14.

Trailing for the first time in the game, Point Pleasant’s Payne rushed for his second touchdown of the game to tie the game heading into the half.

Midway through the third quarter, Brady Adkins pounded it in from 3 yards out giving Point Pleasant a 28-21 lead.

On the next drive, Conner Roberts dropped the snap, picked it up, looked deep and found Seth Pew for a 54-yard touchdown. The Panthers would miss the extra point and trail 28-27.

Early in the fourth quarter, Payne scored his third rushing touchdown of the game, this time from 2 yards out. This time it was the Big Blacks turn to miss an extra point, giving them a 34-27 lead.

On Pikeville’s ensuing drive, Conner Roberts rolled right, tossed it downfield to Christian Billiter who made an outstanding one-handed, over the shoulder catch, setting up the game-tying score.

With just over two minutes remaining and the game tied, Payne called his number from 15 yards out and scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the game and gave the Big Blacks a 41-34 lead.

After a would-be game-tying drive, Pikeville faced a fourth and goal from the 4-yard line when Conner Roberts’ pass was knocked down by Point Pleasant’s Jovone Johnson in the back of the end zone, sealing the Big Blacks’ victory.

With 153 rush yards, 126 passing yards and four touchdowns, Payne was named the Huntington Mall Player of the Game.
