West Virginia State Police have released the name of a man who was shot and killed in a shootout early Monday morning with Hurricane police.

Kevin Shawn Hanson, 42, of Huntington was shot and killed during a shootout with state troopers and Hurricane police just after midnight Monday, State Police said.

Sgt. Phillip Armentrout with the Hurricane Police Department was shot in the leg during the shootout. He was taken to the hospital but has since been released.

At about 11:30 p.m. Sunday night, troopers and Hurricane police began chasing a car that was speeding on Route 60 near Hurricane.

After the car lost control and slid down an embankment on Route 34, troopers and Hurricane police officers tried to engage the person and shots were fired.
