Troopers said at the time they believe Leonard and the suspect knew one another and said there was a conversation between the two before the shooting happened.
The shooting took place near West Virginia State University's campus, and students were told to stay in their current location and lock their doors.
No WVSU students or staff were involved or injured. West Virginia State University President Anthony Jenkins commended campus police and others on the quick action to keep students safe. Jenkins said the university is enforcing its policy that everyone associated with the school must carry their school ID with them.
