Vigil held for an 8-month old baby that was beaten and died
St. Albans, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) —
A community continues to mourn the death of an 8-month old baby girl and Saturday night a vigil was held in her honor.
It's been nearly a month since 8-month old Lillyann Hudson was beaten and died from her injuries. Police charged Lillyann's mother, Chellbie Hudson, and boyfriend, William Bowen IV after an investigation revealed the child's injuries were likely from child abuse.
Numerous motorcycle clubs rode to the home 8-month old Lillyann Hudson. Kanawha County Sheriff deputies say she was beaten by her mother's boyfriend William Bowen IV. It's located in the whispering oaks area of St. Albans.
"Its just horrible that people can do that to a kid, the sad part is also the heroin addiction and its pretty much a drug house that the kids was able to be in," said Vigil Organizer, Steven Hanson.
The criminal complaint says Hudson left the child in the care of Bowen. She came home to find Lillyann unresponsive and barely breathing. Hudson then prevented other people from calling 911 and tried to leave home. Both Hudson and Bowen admitted to police they use drugs.
"The innocent kid had no choice, no chance, no voice, we are the voice," said vigil attendee, Jeff Glenn.
Glenn says he is using his voice to tell drug-addicted parents to leave their children out of that lifestyle.
More than 50 people lit candles and prayed for justice.
Debbie Bagby lives near the area where Lillyann lived and says this situation is unimaginable.
"I have six grandchildren, and if someone touched my grandkids I would hate to think what I would do," said Debbie Bagby.
The group left the candles on the playground, praying for peace but hoping for a change.
"It shouldn't ever happen to a baby," said Glenn. "It was an innocent kid, shouldn't have been in that situation."
25-year old Chellbie Hudson faces child neglect charges and remains in jail on bond. Her boyfriend, 33-year old William Bowen IV is charged with the death of a child and is in jail without bail.
