More than 100 to lose jobs in steel mill closure in Boyd County, Ky.
ASHLAND, KY (WCHS/WVAH) —
A steel mill with dozens of employees is expected to close in Boyd County, Ky.
Kentucky Electric Steel located off of U.S. Route 60 near Ashland will permanently cease operations, according to Ashland Mayor Steve Gilmore. Gilmore said he received a letter from the company Tuesday afternoon.
The closure will affect 113 specialty steel works employees. The first group of employees is expected to be let go beginning March 10. Gilmore said the business cited "current business challenges" as the reason for its closure.
The steel mini-mill produces more than 2,600 bar flat items, according to its website.
