Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting in Roane County

    The Roane County Sheriff's Office has released the name of a man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting.

    Timothy Rhodes, 28, was shot and killed Friday evening by a Roane County deputy, Roane County Sheriff Todd Cole said.

    Cole said Rhodes was spinning his wheels and kicking up rocks in a neighbor's driveway. When deputies responded to the complaint, they approached Rhodes, who they said became aggressive.

    Cole said Rhodes then lunged at the deputy and brought him to the ground. During the struggle, Cole said, Rhodes reached for the deputy's gun. The deputy then fired a shot at Rhodes, killing him.

    The deputy has been placed on leave.

    West Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate.

    The shooting took place on Ambler Ridge Road in Roane County, and Cole said he has no doubt his deputy "acted in the right."

    Cole said a driver was spinning his wheels and kicking up rocks in a neighbor's driveway. When deputies responded to the complaint, they approached the man, who they said became aggressive.

    Cole said the man then lunged at the deputy and brought him to the ground. During the struggle, Cole said, the man reached for the deputy's gun. The deputy then fired a shot at the man, killing him.

    The deputy will be placed on leave.

    No names have been released at this time.
