West Virginia State Police said an armed man who authorities had been searching for after a motorcycle chase in Kanawha County was shot and killed Thursday on Lotus Drive after officers opened fire.

A woman who State Police said was a suspect for allegedly helping the two men on the motorcycle escape was wounded and had injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.

The incident began about 9 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Falcon and Lotus drives when a trooper was responding to a domestic call. The trooper encountered a motorcycle carrying two people that struck the cruiser. One of the riders was not wearing a helmet and the bike had a cardboard tag.

The pursuit was intermittent and went through multiple areas. Authorities thought the motorcycle might return to the Falcon Drive-Lotus Drive area and that is where State Police, Charleston police and Kanawha County deputies responded.

A search for two men on the motorcycle began. One man was taken into custody initially, but he was released.

At some point, the search focused on a home on Lotus Drive, and the suspects came out. State Police said the suspect who was shot had a gun and a trooper and another officer from an unspecified agency fired. He was dead at the scene. The other suspect who had been sought was taken into custody.

The circumstances surrounding how the woman who was wounded was shot were unclear.
