Several media reports Friday said West Virginia University has selected Troy University Coach Neal Brown as the Mountaineers’ head football coach.

ESPN and Yahoo Sports reported, citing unnamed sources, that Brown has been picked for the coaching position.

Brown takes over the reins from Dana Holgorsen, who led the WVU program for eight seasons and was officially welcomed Thursday as the head coach at the University of Houston.

Multiple media outlets had reported that Brown was a top contender for the job along with University of Cincinnati Head Coach Luke Fickell and WVU defensive coordinator Tony Gibson.

A native of Danville, Ky., Brown has a record of 35-16 at Troy, an Alabama school that has a reputation for being giant killers. In 2017, Troy held off a late LSU rally to score an upset victory in Baton Rouge. His 2016 Troy squad lost by only six points to eventual national champion Clemson.

The former offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky has built a successful program at Troy. During Brown’s first season, the team went 4-8, but rebounded with records of 10-3 in 2016; 11-2 in 2017; and 10-3 in 2018, according to the university’s athletic program website. The 2017 team went 6-1 against the seven bowl teams it faced.

Brown also has had success in bowls, with his team winning the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in 2017 over North Texas, 50-30, and the Dollar General Bowl in 2018, 42-32, over Buffalo in Mobile, Ala.
