A Putnam County woman is facing several charges after she was accused of taking federal money from the Teays Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

Kathy Sue Gwinn is the former treasurer of the fire department.

Gwinn is accused of embezzling more than $75,000 through checks she wrote herself while working as the treasurer in the unpaid volunteer position, according to federal court documents.

The thefts occurred between October 2015 and March 2017.

Court documents state that during the time of the thefts, the fire department was getting grant money from FEMA.

Ben Freeman, the fire department’s attorney, said the department wants to recover any money that has been lost.
