West Virginia State Police said a man was shot multiple times and killed Wednesday evening in Institute.

Andre Leonard, who was in his mid- to late-20s, was fatally shot about 6:10 p.m. at the intersection of Elm and Wheatley streets in Institute, troopers said.

Troopers believe Leonard and the suspect knew one another and said there was a conversation between the two before the shooting happened.

A person of interest has been interviewed, but no arrests have been made at this time.

The shooting took place near West Virginia State University's campus, and students were told to stay in their current location and lock their doors.

The school lifted the lockdown after about an hour.
