Suspect dead after shootout in Putnam County; officer wounded

An officer was wounded and a suspect was killed in a shootout early Monday morning in Putnam County.

Sgt. Phillip Armentrout with the Hurricane Police Department was shot in the leg, and the suspect was fatally wounded about during the gun battle.

Armentrout was taken to the hospital but has since been released.

West Virginia State Police said Hurricane police officers and Putnam County deputies began chasing a car about 11:30 p.m. that was speeding on Route 60 near Hurricane.

State Police said the car then turned onto Route 34 toward the town of Hurricane and lost control, sliding partially down the embankment.

Putnam County deputies and Hurricane police officers engaged the person and shots were fired.

West Virginia State Police have not released the name of the suspect.
