Mountain East Conference basketball tournament rolls into Charleston this week

College basketball fans will have a chance to see some fast-breaking action this week at the Charleston Civic Center when the 2018 Mountain East Conference Basketball Tournament comes to town.

First round action for the men’s and women’s competition begins Wednesday, Feb. 28, and the tournament runs through Sunday, March 4, according to the conference’s website.

Local teams West Virginia State University and the University of Charleston will be taking the court.

In the women’s competition, No. 10 Charleston faces Urbana at noon Wednesday in the first round. No. 3 West Virginia State takes on No. 6 Wheeling Jesuit at 2:15 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, in the men’s competition, No. 8 West Virginia State squares off vs. No. 9 West Virginia Wesleyan at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday in the first found. No. 5 Charleston plays No. 4 Shepherd at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.

First round games for the men and women are Wednesday, quarterfinals for the women are Thursday, quarterfinals for the men are Friday, semifinals for the women and men are Saturday and finals for the men and women are Sunday.

Other teams in the Mountain East Conference in addition to West Virginia State and UC are West Liberty, Wheeling Jesuit, Fairmont State, Shepherd, Concord, UVa.-Wise, West Virginia Wesleyan, Glenville State, Notre Dame and Urbana.
