Martinsburg wins third straight Class AAA title with 31-7 win over Spring Valley
WHEELING, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) —
No. 1 Martinsburg took down No. 2 Spring Valley Saturday afternoon to win its third consecutive Class AAA state championship.
The Bulldogs (13-0) capped off a perfect season and extended its 42 game winning streak with a 31-7 over the Timberwolves (13-1).
After a scoreless first quarter, Martinsburg got on the scoreboard midway through the second when quarterback Grant Harmon scored on a 20-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs missed the point-after attempt and took a 6-0 lead.
On Spring Valley's next drive, Martinsburg took control when R.J. Barrett blocked and punt and Trey Sine picked up the loose ball and scored from 26 yards out. The Bulldogs converted a 2-point conversion to take a 14-0 lead.
After Spring Valley failed to convert on fourth down deep in its own territory, Martinsburg's Christ Catlett converted a 29-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 17-0 lead going into the half.
In the third quarter, Martinsburg took complete control over the game with a pair of touchdowns that extended its lead to 31-0.
Spring Valley would get its lone score early in the fourth quarter when Graeson Malashevich found David Livingston in the endzone for an 11-yard touchdown pass.
This marks the third straight season Martinsburg has defeated Spring Valley in the Class AAA title game.
The championship is Martinsburg's seventh since 2010.
