Marshall University earns historic win in NCAA tournament

Marshall University, making a return appearance to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 31 years, earned a historic win Friday over Wichita State University.

The No 13 seed Thundering Herd downed the No. 4 seed Shockers 81-75 to advance in the tournament and play again Sunday. It marks the first NCAA win for Marshall in school history.

The Herd trailed by three points at the half, 37-34, but battled back to earn the win.

Marshall's historic win prompted jubilant celebration from Herd fans, such as the ones assembled to watch the game at Adelphia Sports Bar & Grille in Charleston.

Junior guard Jon Elmore led the Herd with 27 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Junior forward Ajdin Peneva fouled out late, but not before scoring 16 points, including a late dunk to put the Herd up five.

Junior guard C.J. Burks scored 13 points, and freshman forward Jannson Williams added 10 and grabbed seven rebounds.

Marshall will face the winner of the No. 5 West Virginia at 9:40 p.m. ET.
