A man with a lengthy criminal history was arrested by Charleston police Thursday afternoon.
James Allen Valentine, 47, was arrested in the 3700 block of MacCorkle Avenue in Kanawha City and charged with felony fraudulent schemes, according to a release from the Charleston Police Department.
According to the release, Valentine tried to pass a $500 check on a closed account to buy a diamond ring at McCormick Jewelers in Kanawha City. When McCormick Jewelers refused to take the check, he tried to pass it at John Cook Jewelers in Kanawha City.
Police also learned Valentine tried the same scheme at Embassy Suites in Charleston on October 8, according to the release.
Valentine is originally from Virginia but had a Alabama ID. Charleston police said they do not know what brought him to Charleston.
He is wanted in California for burglary, but he will not be extradited. The release said Valentine has a criminal past in California, Nevada, Utah, Florida and New York.
