Man faces child abuse charge after accused of severely spanking child
PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) —
West Virginia State Police said a Putnam County man was charged after he was accused of severely spanking an 8-year-old boy with a belt and leaving bruises on his buttocks.
Travis James Persinger, 27, of Hometown was charged Thursday with child abuse resulting in injury, according to a criminal complaint filed in Putnam County Magistrate Court.
A trooper said he met with an officer with the Winfield Police Department and a registered nurse at Winfield Elementary School regarding an 8-year-old being severely spanked.
The nurse told the trooper the boy told her the suspect pulled his pants down to his knees and spanked him with a belt. The complaint said the man lives with the boy’s mother. The alleged incident was reported to have occurred Wednesday.
On Thursday, the nurse examined the boy’s buttocks area where he reported he was struck by a belt. She photographed the area, and the trooper observed the picture that showed the boy’s bruised buttocks.
Persinger is currently being held in the Western Regional Jail on a $5,000 bond.
