Kanawha County Schools requesting increase to excess levy to improve HVAC, security

If approved, the excess levy increase would increase a yearly bill by $8.39 for every $10,000 of the assessed value of your home and $1.68 for every $1,000 of assessed value of a car. (WCHS/WVAH File)

The Kanawha County Board of Education wants voters to decide in November to raise their property taxes to support the school system.

The excess levy has been in effect since 1937, but board members want an increase. The increase they are requesting is $44 million a year to $64 million a year.

The majority of the levy would provide nearly $109 million for HVAC improvements, district officials said. Other improvements include roofing, athletic turf and improvements to safety and security.

If approved, the change would increase a yearly bill by $8.39 for every $10,000 of the assessed value of your home and $1.68 for every $1,000 of assessed value of a car.
