More than 400 runners laced up their shoes and took to the streets of Charleston for the 44th annual Charleston Distance Run.

Competitors could take part in the full 15 mile run, three person 15 mile relay and a 5K run/walk.

This year’s race also paid tribute to Joni Adams, a veteran runner in the Charleston area and retired Kanawha County teacher, who was killed in the June floods.

Adams loved the distance run and ran the 15 mile race every year since 1976, when she became the first female finisher from the Mountain State.

This year, in the 44th running of the CDR, 416 runners took place in the 15 miler.

Juris Silenieks averaged a 5:27 mile and finished the race in 1:21:42.7, and was the fastest in the field.

In the men’s division, Sam Bird finished second, nearly 7 seconds behind Silenieks, finishing the 15 mile course in 1:28:05.7.

Clara Santucci was the top female finisher, finishing the Charleston Distance Run in 1:33:13.4.

Santucci crossed the finish line 11 minutes before second place finisher, Jennifer King, who averaged a 7 minute mile to complete the course in 1:44:46.4.
