Human remains found near Cross Lanes home
CROSS LANES, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) —
The Kanawha County Sheriff Office said a decomposed body was found behind a stone home on Peasants Drive in Cross Lanes Thursday.
"When deputies first got on scene they realized that there was skeletal remains that appeared to be human, that prompted detectives," said Kanawha County Sheriff's Department, Sgt. Brian Humphreys.
Humphreys said the property owner was doing yard work and stumbled upon the remains. Personal belongings were found near the severely decomposed body which deputies said should help in the investigation.
"Some of the preliminary estimates are that it may be a couple of months that the body had been there, but that's, of course, preliminary," Humphreys said.
While deputies investigated, neighbors learned of the discovery.
"I mean I never been up through here, but never expected they would find remains of a human being up there," said neighbor, Daniel Gatewood.
Gatewood said he lives in a trailer down the hill from where the body was found and added the area is quiet.
"It was something I would have never thought of," Gatewood said.
Deputies would not confirm the sex or age of the body and say they are treating the discovery as suspicious.
"There will be a lot of work done now just in case something turns into a criminal investigation down the road," Humphreys said.
Neighbors in the area still shocked this would happen close to their homes, but say they're glad it's being investigated.
