UPDATE: Human remains found in Kanawha County identified

Update (9/1/18):

The human remains found in a wooded area near Phyllis Drive in Mink Shoals have been positively identified.

Dental records were used to positively identified the remains as Ethan Christopher Spradling, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

The remains were transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston, then taken for analysis to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

Ethan was reported as missing on May 4, 2018 and was last seen at the family residence on May 3, 2018.

Search dogs found human remains in eastern Kanawha County Tuesday morning, officials said.

Volunteers with the West Virginia K-9 Search and Rescue group found the remains near Phyllis Drive in Mink Shoals. Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the scene about 10:30 a.m.

The K-9 group had previously searched the area with detectives working a missing person case. Ethan Spradling, 21, was last seen May 3 in the area, but detectives are not speculating the remains are his.

The West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office are working to identify the remains.
