Five injured in Interstate 64 construction zone crash in Putnam County
PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) —
Putnam 911 said five people were transported to the hospital after a crash in the Interstate 64 construction zone. One of the people injured was a Division of Highways worker.
The wreck involved at least two vehicles and happened about 12:30 p.m. West Virginia 511 says the crash was at mile marker 31 . The Hurricane exit is at mile marker 34.
Eastbound lanes were closed temporarily. The lanes have reopened, but traffic was still moving slowly about 1:30 p.m.
Brent Walker, communications director for the West Virginia Department of Transportation, said a driver apparently had a medical emergency, went into the work zone and struck one of the agency’s vehicles that was occupied by a Division of Highways worker.
The motorist who hit the vehicle and the DOH worker were both transported to the hospital. No conditions were immediately available.
Eastbound traffic was shut down for more than an hour.
Law enforcement officers have been cracking down in the construction zone where three people have died previously. Rumble strips were installed to slow motorists down, and the speed limit has been lowered.
