Jackson County deputies said a father charged with felony child abuse told them he became frustrated with his screaming and crying infant and numerous times tried to quiet her by slamming her against a swing set and throwing the child across the room into a piece of furniture.

Dylan Ray, 21, of Ripley is charged with felony child abuse after the baby suffered nine skull fractures and other injuries, deputies said.

Ray was arraigned in Jackson County Tuesday and bond was set at $300,000.

The infant, estimated to be about 2 months old, was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital on Monday and then was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

The condition of the child, whose injuries cover about 40 percent of her skull, was not immediately available.

Medical staff at the hospital said it was clear the child had suffered numerous blows to the held or had been hit with an object. The injuries were not accidental and appeared to be consistent with child abuse or neglect, the complaint said.

Jackson County deputies and Ripley police are investigating the case.
