Deputies continue to search for suspect in Rand shooting

Kanawha County deputies say they are searching for Gerard Malcolm Maxwell, 32, of Rand in connection with Tuesday night's fatal shooting in Rand. (Kanawha County Sheriff's Office)

Residents in one Rand neighborhood call Tuesday night's shooting a tragedy, but told Eyewitness News it's not a surprise to see violent crime.

"It's always been this way," John Miller said. "It's just the way it is."

Miller has lived in the neighborhood since the 1980s. He said he has seen many crime sprees happen over the years.

Kanawha County deputies are still searching for Gerard Maxwell, who is wanted in connection with the shooting death of Marian Chapman. Kanawha County Sheriff Mike Rutherford said this is not the first time Maxwell has been connected to violent crime.

In 2016, Maxwell pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after deputies said he and several others gunned a man down on Starling Drive in Rand with an assault rifle. Another woman was injured in the shooting spree.

"We want to stress he is extremely dangerous," Rutherford said. "This is not the first time he has been involved in shootings with multiple gunshots involved."

Deputies said there was an altercation inside the home Tuesday night that spilled out to the porch leading up to the shooting. Anyone who has information about Maxwell's location is asked to call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office at 304-357-0200.
