Civil lawsuits filed against Charleston area doctor consolidated for evidence review
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) —
A single judge is taking control of more than a dozen civil lawsuits filed against a Charleston area doctor now also charged criminally with molesting sedated women patients.
Dr. Steven Matulis was not in court Wednesday morning, but nearly 20 lawyers representing either him, medical businesses or hospitals getting sued because of his alleged actions or women suing him were in front of Judge Jennifer Bailey.
Some 15 civil lawsuits are spread among half-a-dozen Kanawha County judges. A lawyer for a woman who claims she was molested led the arguments to consolidate the claims to get the case that dates back years moving.
The judge did agree to consolidate the cases, at least for the purpose of discovering evidence. There are still expected to be several separate trials unless a mass litigation panel takes over the case.
Matulis maintains he has done nothing wrong. He will go on trial Oct. 1 in the criminal case where there are four women claiming they were touched inappropriately by the doctor.
