The city of Nitro held a ceremonial flag lowering Saturday evening.

The event was part of the city's Veterans Day festivities. It focused on showing appreciation and recognizing those that have served. Organizers say that remembrance is just a part of Nitro's legacy.

"This is a small little community in the middle of West Virginia and you see the crowd joining here today,” Colonel Johnny Ryan, Commander of 130th Air Lift Wing Charleston said. “It's just community bonds and everything that we do especially in the national guard we are a community based organization."

A flag raising ceremony will also take place Sunday to complete the city’s Veterans Day ceremonies.
