Charleston police are investigating after a dog was found dead in a black trash bag in an alley.

Police officers responded about 10 p.m. Tuesday to the 300 block of 30th Street in North Charleston regarding a missing 7-year-old dog, a news release from the Charleston Police Department said. A woman told police her dog had been missing since Sunday when she let it out in the front yard of her home.

The woman told police her son may have found the dog in an alley in the 2800 block of 30th Street.

Police went to the area in the alleyway and found the dog in a trash bag. Police said the dog was badly decayed and had a small hole that appeared to be unnatural near its stomach.

Police are not sure what caused the hole or how the dog died at this time.

The Criminal Investigation Division and the Charleston Humane Officer are investigating. Anyone with information should contact police at 304-348-8111.
