A Boyd County sheriff's deputy was honored for carrying a shooting victim to safety while the shooting suspect fired a round from a firearm in his direction.

Deputy Scott Ball was honored with an award for bravery Thursday evening, the sheriff's department said.

Ball responded to the scene of a domestic situation October 2018 on Barbeque Road in Catlettsburg. Kentucky State Police said Casey Watkins shot his mother, Tammy Watkins, in the abdomen. Ball carried the victim to safety while Casey fired a round at him, the sheriff's department said.

The woman was taken to Cabell Huntington Hospital for her injuries. Casey Watkins was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Ball was presented with a plaque and a pin during the ceremony.
