The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating after a body was discovered in the rubble of a home destroyed by a fire in Kanawha County.

The fire happened about 2 a.m. Wednesday in the 1500 block of Brooke Road in Alum Creek.

Alum Creek Volunteer Fire Department Chief James Oldaker said when firefighters arrived at the scene, the home was engulfed in flames and falling to the ground. He said the home had been abandoned, and they weren't able to locate anyone inside of the rubble.

Oldaker said he received a call Wednesday night from a woman who was concerned because she said her brother would sneak into the home to sleep.

Firefighters went back to the scene Thursday morning and found the body inside of the rubble.

Fire marshals said the body had been covered by a wall, and firefighters were able to locate the body after the fire rekindled and the wall had burned away.

At this time, the investigators have not been able to identify the victim.

The body has been sent to the West Virginia Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
