Police identify body found in Kanawha City

The Charleston Police Department says a man's body was found Friday morning in Kanawha City.

According to a news release from the department, the body of John Asbury Jr., 29, was found behind the AutoZone located at 6304 MacCorkle Ave.

Police said they received a report about 2 a.m. Friday from a woman saying she had not seen Asbury Jr. for three days. The complainant informed police he was homeless and had been staying near the riverbank behind Lowe's in Kanawha City.

There were no apparent physical injuries to the body, the release says. Found around the body were multiple hypodermic needles and other drug paraphernalia.

An acquaintance of Asbury's told police he was known to be a heroin addict.

Asbury's body was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The cause of death is currently unknown.
