Charleston police say they are trying to identify this man and woman after they shoplifted Tuesday morning from the Kroger on the West Side. (Charleston Police Department)

Charleston police said a man fired a shot into the air after he and a woman shoplifted from a West Side grocery store and he was confronted by a store employee.

The man and the woman entered Kroger about 6:40 a.m. Tuesday and shoplifted items, according to a news release from the Charleston Police Department.

When a staff member followed them from the store and attempted to make contact, the man pointed a gun up in the air, fired one round and then ran from the scene with the woman he was with in the store, police said.

Police said they believe the two suspects live near the store.

Anyone who knows the identity of the man and woman or knows where they are staying are asked to call the police department at 304-348-6400 or Metro 911.
