Traveling WV: Turkey Spur Overlook

One of the best views in the mountain state. (WCHS/WVAH)

The Turkey Spur overlook at Grandview in Raleigh County has been an iconic spot for many years. It's unique view from 3 different points has been called "the other Grandview" by visitors. However, in 2015 the access to those beautiful views was destroyed as arsonists burnt the huge boardwalk to the ground. The resulting wildfire burned an additional 35 acres at Turkey Spur.

Thanks to volunteers, local businesses, donations, and a huge fundraising effort by The Friends of New River Gorge National River, the boardwalk was rebuilt. The National Park Service recently reopened the overlook with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. The new boardwalk provides easy access to some of the best views the state has to offer.
