A Putnam County man has been charged after court records say he smacked his 9-year-old son in the face.

Alfred Ernest Hedrick, 55, of Bancroft, is charged with child abuse and domestic battery, according to a criminal complaint from Putnam County Magistrate Court.

Officers responded Thursday, Aug. 27 to a home on Jefferson Street in Bancroft to a call from a child saying he had been beat on by his parents. When officers arrived, the victim said his father, Hedrick, had smacked him.

The victim told officers he went on a bike ride and when he came home his parents started screaming at him to leave the home. The boy asked his parents what he had done and then his father started hitting him in the face, the complaint said.

The boy informed officers his father hit him with an open hand. Officers said the victim had bruising around his forehead and on the left cheek.

While officers were talking to the victim, Hedrick arrived to the scene on a bike. Officers noted they could smell alcohol coming from Hedrick's breath.

Hedrick became upset when asked about the incident and was taken into custody.

Hedrick is being held at Western Regional Jail on a $15,000 surety/cash bond.
