Sunshine Farm & Gardens
Flower Power In Greenbrier County
EYEWITNESS ONLINE WEBCAST VIDEO
Barry Glick came to the mountains of West Virginia in 1972 having bought a farm in Greenbrier County. Part of the self described "northern city hippie movement" Glick was advised by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to plant pine trees and sell two by fours, but Barry wanted more out of his little slice of Appalachia...much more. After planting a successful organic apple orchard, Glick discovered Helleborus Orientallis more commonly known as Lenten Roses and their ability to bloom in winter during the coldest time of year. Now Barry specializes in breeding Helleborus and grows virtually every Hellebore species within the genus and maintains more than 50,000 flowering size stock plants for seed production. 'Sunshine Selections' are produced using a labor-intensive process of emasculation and hand-pollination to produce the only commercially available line of true F1 hybrids. Sunshine Farm also grows over 10,000 rare and different flowering perennials, bulbs, trees and shrubs for discriminating gardeners and collectors.
