![]() Atlatl Thrower An Ancient Weapon Gets A New Life
![]()
The bow and arrow is not the novel invention people today believe it to be, but rather a progression of existing technology. The existing technology, for thousands of years, was that of the atlatl and dart. Like the bow, the atlatl accelerates a flexible shaft from the rear. For the bow the flexible shaft is called an arrow. For the atlatl the flexible shaft is called a dart. The atlatl is truly an ancient and yet very effective weapon. Randy Whaley of Mason County discovered the weapon 6 years ago, learned it's effectiveness, and has never looked back. Whaley has turned his rural Mason County farm into a competitive atlatl course, and will hold the first atlatl competitive meet there this weekend. While the men and women who keep the use of the atlatl alive is relatively small, they are a very passionate group. They enjoy making their weapons and using them not only in competition, but in hunting as well, literally keeping in touch with ancient man.
