![]() Paint Creek Book A local author gives the past new life.
Dale Payne of Fayette County has always loved history. A retired West Virginia State Police officer and former county magistrate, he has turned his passion into four pictorial history books, the latest being A Pictorial History of Paint Creek completed in 2009. "I've always loved history and the people connected to the stories" says Dale. "In particular I enjoy old photographs, and being able to tell a story about the picture."
After advertising in local newspapers, Dale began receiving hundreds of old photographs from folks interested in preserving their local history. Paint Creek and several other communities were home to thousands of people during the heyday of coal mining, now those towns no longer exist. "Many communities on Paint Creek were full service towns, with movie theaters, grocery stores, and churches, today those towns are simply names of exits on the West Virginia Turnpike." says Dale.
