Judge Judy, the Emmy-nominated, daily, half-hour, syndicated, courtroom series, began a triumphant fifth season on Monday, September 11, 2000. Presided over by outspoken former family court judge, Judge Judith Sheindlin, the series serves as a benchmark for the courtroom genre.
Judge Judy's no-nonsense, hard-hitting decisiveness, combined with her biting wit, has made her a pop-culture icon for a new generation. She has been featured numerous times by many top national television outlets including, "Entertainment Tonight," "The Today Show," CNN's "Larry King Live," "The Tonight Show," "The View" and "20/20," as well as "Dateline," "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," "Saturday Night Live," and many more. Additionally, she was profiled on the popular A&E series, "Biography", and was selected to serve as one of the judges for the 1999 Miss America Pageant. JUDGE JUDY has also been featured in several major publications, including People, TV Guide, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Parade, Entertainment Weekly, McCall's, Ladies' Home Journal, Modern Maturity, Family Circle, Good Housekeeping, Time, and many local publications.
It was a profile on "60 Minutes" that first got her national attention, and it was that appearance that made the JUDGE JUDY series a reality.
As Lawrence A. Lyttle, president of Big Ticket Television, states, "When I first saw Judge Judy Sheindlin profiled, I thought, this woman's got something the American public wants! People like to see final and binding resolutions."
He continues, "Now, Judge Judy's outspoken style and inimitable wit have proven so successful on the series that there has been a rejuvenation of the courtroom genre. Part of this is because court shows in general have the ability to affect people in conflict situations. In contrast to talk shows, on which conflicts are aired and tossed around, a court show like JUDGE JUDY ends with a decision that someone was right and someone was wrong."
"Humor is a key factor in what draws people to JUDGE JUDY's growing mass appeal. The American public likes the fact that Judge Judy is straight-to-the-point yet still has a tremendous wit that audiences can identify with," adds Randy Douthit, executive producer of JUDGE JUDY.
The series selects actual court cases from across the nation and places them before the charismatic Judge Judy, a credible arbitrator well known for her decisions on some of the toughest cases in New York -- and on TV. JUDGE JUDY focuses on family court cases, marital dissension and small claims disputes. It's about relationships in conflict and Judge Judy's unique ability to act as a true moral compass for people seeking guidance, insight and resolution in their often complicated lives.
Judge Judy first enjoyed national success with the publication of her book Don't Pee On My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining, where she talks openly about what most people feel privately on many of today's pressing family issues, including the disintegrating family system in America. Published by Harper Collins in January 1999, Judge Judy's second book Beauty Fades, Dumb Is Forever was a New York Times best seller for nine weeks. The book deals with women's issues, the need to have self-esteem, independence, self-reliance and most importantly, a sense of humor.
In her first children's book, Win or Lose By How You Choose, Judge Judy poses a series of witty and wise questions and encourages parents to talk through the answers with their children, exploring the choices and examining the consequences of each course of action.
In July 2000, Judge Judy published her third adult book, Keep It Simple, Stupid: You're Smarter Than You Look, in which she shares her no-nonsense opinions on solving everyday family squabbles.
With years of experience in the New York family court system, Judge Judy has been at the center of her fair share of controversies and triumphs in her public campaign to improve the family court system. Judge Judy has earned a reputation for being aggressive, decisive and insightful in her rulings and is admired for her compassion and outspoken style. Life on the bench has taught Judge Judy to cut through a dispute and get to the core of the emotional issue at hand. As a result, she is able to impose firm closure to the situation in a fast and fair manner.
Taking a common sense approach, Judge Judy's goal is to make a permanent and worthwhile impression that will discourage repeat offenders and help heal families and victims of injustice.
