WVU Women's Basketball: Mountaineers are champions of Big 12 Tournament

Mike Carey is a pure coach.

He proved it again in the Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.

Carey, a Clarksburg native, guided West Virginia to its first-ever Big 12 tournament crown with a 77-66 win over Baylor, who had won six straight conference tournament crowns and seven in a row over the Mountaineers.

The Bears had won all of the titles since the Big 12 was reshaped.

Tynice Martin led WVU with 32 points. She was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

West Virginia, which improved to 23-10, defeated No. 19 Oklahoma, No. 12 Texas and No. 2 Baylor to get that first conference tournament title since winning the Atlantic 10 back in 1989.

The win earns WVU the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
