Game 4: No. 1 Wheeling Central advances to Class A semifinals

Top-seeded Wheeling Central got its Class A state tournament started with a convincing win over Valley-Fayette Wednesday evening at the Charleston Civic Center.

No. 1 Wheeling Central (24-2) never trailed in its 67-52 first round victory over No. 8 Valley Fayette (16-11).

Wheeling Central dominated the first half, and the Greyhounds 42-11 heading into the locker room. Trailing by 31, Valley-Fayette stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring the Maroon Knights 26-8 and cutting the lead to 50-37, but the comeback bid fell short.

Wheeling Central had four players score in double-figures and was led by Brent Price who scored 16 points of 6-7 shooting. John Burkhalter (14), Owen Gainer (12) and Gabe Rohmann (10) all hit double-digits for the Maroon Knights.

Valley-Fayette’s Spencer Dean led all scorers with 21 points.

Wheeling Central will take on the winner of No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 5 Gilmer County in the Class AA semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday.
