Ohio High School Basketball: Fairland's magical season comes to an end

The Fairland Dragons ended a 56-year drought by playing in the Ohio Boys State Basketball Tournament in Columbus on Friday. The Dragons lost to Cleveland VASJ, 73-50.

After a near 60-year wait, the Fairland Dragons would have loved to stick around Columbus for a couple of days inside the Schottenstein Center where the Ohio High School Boys State Basketball Tournament is played.

Unfortunately, a talented Cleveland Villa Angela St. Joseph team stopped the magical run by Nathan Speed's crew by a final of 73-50 in a Division III semifinal Friday morning.

VASJ had four players in double figures with Alonzo Gaffney leading the way by scoring 18. Jerry Higgins added 17, William Butler scored 16 and Daniel McGarry finished with 11.

Keedrick Cunningham had 17 for the Dragons while Luke Thomas dropped in 11 and Kollin Van Horn produced 10.

The State Tournamnet - the 95th annual - had a Fairland team competing for the first time since 1961.

The season ended for the Dragons at 25-2. VASJ improved to 22-6 and will meet Roger Bacon for the title on Saturday.
