Veteran Charleston Catholic head coach Bill Mehle has an experienced group of Fighting Irish returning this season. A group that is hopeful of making a run at a Class A title, one of the team's leaders is first baseman Trae Swisher.
His love for the game comes honestly with several notable relatives.
It's been 4 years since Charleston Catholic has been in the state tournament and it's also been four years since the Irish last took home title,
Catholic is definitely a team to look out for come June with the help of such seniors as Swisher.
"I''ve still yet to play at power park during the tournament. we need to get back there, we just got to come together play as a team hit as a team and do all the little things right," said Swisher.
Swisher is a distant cousin of former Major League Baseball player Nick Swisher.
Swisher's dad is Steve Swisher who is from parkersburg.
Steve was also a Major Leaguer.
Trae works out with Steve and has received several equipment items from Nick Swisher over the years.
"it's amazing to have those connections just to see someone that was like you at point to grow up be a big league player and the help and support young guys and their dreams," he said.
The Swisher family has had some greats in this state. his grandpa is the current head coach of Ripley softball and his great uncle was a long time coach for Ripley baseball.
Those two have provided the only state championships at ripley.
"Unspeakable i've heard stories of me being 2 years old and being in the dugouts."
