Game 1: Weirton Madonna tops Fayetteville 44-32 in boys tournament opener
CHARLESTON, WV (WCHS/WVAH) —
Joey Ewusiak dropped in 21 points and the Fayetteville Pirates were held to just 22 percent shooting in a first round win by the Weirton Madonna Blue Dons at the West Virginia Boys State Basketball Tournament.
The No. 6 Blue Dons scored an upset in the tournament's first game, winning 44-32 over the No. 3 Pirates.
Fayetteville was held to 22 percent shooting in the contest, going 12-53 from the floor. The Blue Dons shot 41 percent in the game (14-34).
The score was more even at the halftime break, with the Blue Dons taking a 23-13 lead into the locker room.
After the third quarter, Weirton Madonna led 35-20, but a 12 point fourth quarter helped the Pirates lower the final score margin to 12.
Eight Fayetteville players scored in the contest, but no player reached double figures. Will Fenton led the way with six points and 11 rebounds.
The Blue Dons will play the winner of No. 2 Ravenswood and No. 7 Huntington St. Joe at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
