Countdown to Kickoff (Ravenswood): Red Devils out to end 2-year drought

Ravenswood's last playoff appearance was in 2015. They hope to change that this year.

RAVENSWOOD (WCHS/WVAH) - Last season the Ravenswood Red Devils posted a 4-6 record. Now in season number three as the head coach, Kemp Kelly feels the pieces are in place for more improvement in 2017.

. . .

The Devils have progressed well early on in the preseason.

"At this point of our preparation, I don't think we've ever been this far along with any of the teams that I have ever coached," said Kelley. "And a lot of that is you have senior leadership and everybody has played quite a bit to this point. So it's good for us, we're excited."

After moving to Maryland last summer, Stephen Dawson is back for his senior year as the Red Devil quarterback. Speedy Max Hilton, a junior, shifts back to receiver after leading the offense in 2016.

"With Stephen back, I feel like we're going to be able to throw a lot more with him and Max out in the slot," said senior receiver Jake Greene. "Max will be able to use more of his running and catching ability and Stephen is going to have more of a gunslinger type of action. Be able to throw a lot deep. Mix in some run here and there."

The Devils lost a couple of close games last season, which they aim to change in 2017.

"I'm really excited about having a big senior team and atmosphere," said senior lineman Elijah Benson. "Can't wait to see what we do on the field because we had a lot of us start as sophomores. Didn't go so good. Last year went better. This year (we're) looking forward to having great season."

In 2016-17 school year, the Devils played for a Class A championship in basketball and baseball.

"Feel like a lot of us talked about the baseball and basketball team making it to the state championship," said Greene. "They didn't win it. All of us got together and said it's our turn. Baseball and basketball, our turn now."

Success against a solid schedule would no doubt propel the Devils into the postseason.

"We have a tough schedule," said Kelley. "We look forward to playing all of those teams."

Ravenswood opens the season on the road August 25 against Wahama.
