Game 20: Fairmont Senior wins Class AA title

After losing in the previous two championship games, the Fairmont Senior girls basketball teams won its first Class AA state title Saturday.

No. 2 Fairmont Senior (24-4) defeated No. 1 Bluefield (23-3) 54-42 to win the Class AA state championship.

The Polar Bears and Beavers were tied at 12 after the first quarter, but the Polar Bears dominated the second and third quarters to take a 41-24 lead into the final quarter. The Beavers outscored the Polar Bears 18-13 in the final period, but their comeback effort came up short.

Fairmont Senior was led by Erica Bowles 23 point, 8 rebound performance. She also tallied 5 steals in the game. Anysa Jordan notched a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Both Bowels and Jordan were dominant during the state tournament. Bowles averaged 23.3 points, 9 rebounds and 4.3 steals. Jordan averaged a double-double with 26.6 points and 12.7 rebounds.

Fairmont Senior dominated its three state tournament games, winning by an average of 21.6 points.

In the opening round, the Polar Bears beat No. 7 Bridgeport 65-41. In the semifinals, Fairmont Senior blew out No. 3 North Marion 65-36.

This was the Polar Bears' first AA state title. Fairmont State won the AAA state championship in 1997.
