Huntington defeats Cabell Midland to cap off perfect regular season

Huntington High capped off a perfect regular season with a 27-14 win over rival Cabell Midland in our final Wendy's Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week of the season.

The No. 1 Highlanders (10-0) jumped out to an early lead, but then had to rally after No. 11 Cabell Midland (5-5) took the lead early in the second half to win the Battle for the Shield.

The Highlanders got on the board first when star running back Jadon Hayes scored from 2 yards out to give Huntington an early 7-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter, the Highlanders would add to their lead. On a read option play, quarterback Luke Zban used a great stiff arm to score from 7 yards out. A missed extra point would give the Highlanders a 13-0 lead.

Huntington would hold that lead going into halftime.

It wouldn't take long for Cabell Midland to get on the board after halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Cabell Midland's Ivan Vaughn scored from the 1 yard line to cut Huntington's lead to 13-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Huntington would fumble the ball and Cabell Midland's J.J. Roberts would recover to set the Knights up with a short field.

Just two plays later, Midland took advantage of the Huntington turnover when Isaiah Duncan took an inside handoff, bounced it to the outside and scored from 29 yards out. The Knights would convert the extra point and take a 14-13 lead after scoring 14 points in less than 2 minutes.

Cabell Midland's lead would not last long. Just over a minute later, Hayes dove into the endzone and scored his second touchdown of the game to give the Highlander's a 20-14 lead.

Huntington would add another score late in the third quarter would Zban connected with Hayes on a 29 yard pass that gave the Highlanders a 27-14 lead.

Hayes rushed for 134 yards and scored three total touchdowns and was named the Wendy's Player of the Game.
