HURRICANE, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) – If you’ve ever thought about getting out on the lake to fish but didn’t have a license, you’re in luck. This weekend is your chance to get out there and reel in a fish, for free.

Fishing is a family affair for Luke and Rodger Miller. The grandfather, grandson duo have been hitting the water for five years.

"I'm fortunate to have a very large family and we get together to fish and that makes it great,” Rodger said. “And the grandsons are just getting a good start and it's fun to watch them learn and get excited."

Excited is an understatement for Luke, 8. He said the biggest fish he ever caught was a 32 inch catfish.

"I'm like woah! This thing is big," said Luke.

Kids can fish anywhere across West Virginia for free all year, but this weekend, June 6-7, adults can get in on the fun too, even if they’re not from the state. That means you can bring your out-of-town relatives or friends with you, making it a great time to take a trip.

"It's really kind of a good thing to get people that have gotten away from fishing back into it or to really introduce it to people that haven't done it before,” said Nate Taylor, WV DNR Biologist. “You don't have to worry about buying a fishing license to go out and do it."

The fishing opportunities this time of year are great. You can catch pretty much anything from trout to bass.

"We have plenty of public ground and we have a lot of little small lakes and ponds and stuff that would be a great place to go,” Taylor said. “Many of our state parks and wildlife management areas also have little ponds and stuff that we stock regularly with fish and it'd just be a great weekend thing to get your family out, a great activity to have some family bonding time."

Just like the Millers. Enjoying the great outdoors, each other’s company and some feisty fish!

"There's a lot of good things that you can experience and learn from fishing," Rodger said.
